Juliette Gordon Low would be thrilled with all of the new outdoor badges that are available for younger scout to earn. Respecting nature and the great outdoors is directly in line with what she wanted girls to learn. The Daisy Eco Learner badge is easy to do with your troop.

Note: You may want to do Steps 1 and 3 before doing Step 2.

Step 1 Be Prepared to Protect Nature Before You Go Outdoors

Pre-Meeting Prep

Decide where you will be taking your troop to earn this badge. This is a simple one to earn when you are camping with your troop.

Find out what kind of things you would find at your site and then make a paper plate Memory Game for the girls to play together.

White Paper Plates (extras can be used for snacks at meetings or other crafts). Smaller plate sizes also available.

Pictures of the things you will find on your outing (make two of each). Get these from magazines or print from your computer. Make sure to get a few facts for each item you select to share with the girls while they play.

This is a fun activity to play outdoors if you can. If not, you will need a large space in order to play.

Mix up the plates and place them face down in rows. Have each girl take turns turning two over. She gets to keep them both if they are a pair. Then your co-leader and you can ask the girls if they know what the item is and if they know anything about it. Then you can add some interesting facts that you have learned and share them.

Step 2 Keep Living Things Safe While You Walk in Nature

While you are on your nature walk, make frequent stops for the girls to stop and draw what they see. Have them pay attention to any kind of footprints they find and talk about how they can help the animals stay safe in their natural habitat.

Step 3 Learn How to Protect Nature from Trash

Materials

Magazines
Scissors
Glue sticks
9 x 13 paper, 2 for each group

For this activity, you are going to divide the girls into groups of 3-4. Each group will receive magazines, scissors and glue sticks.

On the 9 x 13 paper, you will want to write "Yes, it is found in nature" on one paper and "No, it is not found in nature" on the other. Most girls this age can recognize the words "yes" and "no".

Each group will look through the magazines and cut out pictures of items they would find in nature and items they would not and glue them on the appropriate piece of paper. When time is up, each group can share with her sister scouts what items they found.
