The Daisy Outdoor Art Maker badge can be earned any time of year for those of you who live in a more temperate climate. When my troop was in elementary school, they loved to earn any badge or do any activity that was outdoors. We met directly after school and met in our school Art Room, so a change of scenery was always welcome.

The three steps to earn the Daisy Outdoor Art Maker Badge are fun for your girls to do.

Step 1 See the Colors of Nature

Materials

Smocks (have the girls remove their vests and tunics as well)

Flat Canvas Panels

Acrylic Paint

Paint Brushes

Foam Paper Plates (to use as paint palettes)

As a group, ask the girls what they think the word "nature" means. Then talk about the colors that are found in nature. You may want to keep a chart in order of the rainbow and write the answers with that color.

While you are having the discussion, you co-leader and parent volunteers can be making paint palettes for the girls, with a bit of each color paint on each plate.

Weather permitting, take the girls outside to explore the nature around them. Have them find something that they want to paint. If you have a space for them sit and paint, like a blanket or a picnic bench, then let them create their masterpieces.

Step 2 Hear the Sounds of Nature

You may want to consider doing this step first before you go outdoors and paint with your troop.

Nature has many sounds. In these interactive YouTube videos, girls listen to the sound and then have a chance to guess the animal before the answer is given. If you want to the girls to move a bit, you can stop the video and have them jump up for choice one, flap their arms for choice 2, and do a jumping jack for choice 3.

There are two different ones to play.

If you do this first, you can listen for sounds outdoors and then do the color activity outside while you are there.

Another option for this step is to have the children make instruments. You can Use Resources Wisely and make a kazoo from a toilet paper roll.

White Tempera Paint

Wax Paper

Rubber Bands

Scissors

Bowl to Trace

Pre-Meeting Prep Work:

Paint the toilet paper tubes white so the colorful stickers will stand out more.

Step 3 Share Your Outdoor Art

Pre-Meeting Prep Work:

On the computer, type out in different colors and fonts seven ways to keep nature safe.

1. Know Before You Go
2. Choose the Right Path
3. Trash Your Trash
4. Leave What You Find
5. Be Careful With Fire
6. Respect Wildlife
7. Be Kind to Other Visitors

Talk with the girls about these rules for keeping nature safe. They can then mount these on contruction paper, then glue them to poster board. The girls can draw nature scenes that they can cut our and glue to the perimeter of the poster. You can ask parents to come in a few minutes early so that the girls can share what they learned.
